All of us know the current insane scene in Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore to be more precise (23rd Jun 2010 – 27th Jun 2010). Much has been said and debated about the World Classical Tamil Conference.

The conference is organized by Tamil Nadu Govt and the chairman for this conference is Mr. Karunanidhi, the CM himself. The hoopla around the conference is extraordinary – so much so that they decided to have a tamil anthem. The theme song, “Semmozhiyaana Thamizh Mozhiyaam” is written by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, composed by by A.R. Rahman and directed by Gautam Vasudev Menon.

Most of the singers featured in the Tamil Anthem are not tamilians is another thing.

This is officially the 9th World Tamil Conference and insanity has peaked this time around. All the banners (shops/offices, including potti-kada) need to be either in Tamil or should be both in tamil and English

Two days back, some guys from Chennai Corporation started removing all the banners that were ONLY in English. Even the nearby potti-kada was not spared.

However there was one brand that managed to have its way. Recently Muthoot Group started a new office in Mylapore, Chennai. The office was pretty huge and they had 6 banners in yellow and red, all of them in English ONLY. Replacing all these banners would certainly be a task. Just before the inauguration day of the conference they posted a banner outside one of their windows.

It read as “கலைஞ்சருக்கும், உலக தமிழ் செம்மொழி மாநாட்டுக்கும், முத்தூட் குழுமத்தின் மனமுவந்த வணக்கங்களும், வாழ்த்துக்களும்” (Hearty Congratulations from Muthoot Group to Kalaignar and World Classical Tamil Conference). The banner also had that typical Kalaignar picture

Needless to say, they were spared. Their banners remained intact. And it will remain so.

Oh yeah and the huge congratulatory banner came down yesterday. Obviously Muthoot group needs some air!

  1. He himself as various groups/cinema community to conduct a felicitation function… So don’t worry he is such a shameless 🙂

And these removal of banner is happening only in main roads I still see lots of banners in English in many of the side streets.. And I’m not sure how people are going to develop Tamil language by having the banners in Tamil…

What they mean by Tamil is “Supreme Coffee Shop” will be named as “சுப்ரீம் காபி ஷாப்” instead of “சிறந்த கொட்டைவடிநீர் கடை”.. Even if they try to write in classical Tamil nobody is going to understand what it is..

Being said all these… I’m a hardcore Tamil fan.. And I’m reading all sangam literature.. It should come based on interest nobody should force a language on somebody…

  2. must have some BIG connections 🙂

  3. Tamil is indeed a great language and has made vast contributions to our literary traditions. But so also has been the contribution of Sanskrit to the richness of South Indian culture. I have blogged about this at

  4. Hi

We came across your blog and appreciate the work you have been doing for online users and the Indian web community on the whole. We are pleased with the passion and interest you exhibit in your regular posts and know that blogs have immense control in today’s world.

Your blog has caught our eye and we want to give you an opportunity to be part of something memorable and exciting. As India has ushered itself into the Digital Age with great enthusiasm and resources, DTH services have brought in a new wave of high-quality television viewing into everyone’s homes.

Have you wondered what goes into the making of an HD signal that you receive at your set-top box at home?? This technological marvel cannot be expressed in words and has to be experienced first-hand. After all, seeing is believing! We are organizing a special visit for bloggers to one of the UPLINK CENTRES of Reliance BIG TV; at Koparkhairane, Navi Mumbai! This is the epicenter of the action; that happens when a signal is broadcast from a Television channel and sent out to the entire world.

This opportunity is truly a one-of-a-kind and only for a select few! Do let us know if you are interested; at the earliest.
